Dealing With Depression - Natural Cures

Depression is a state of mind, where nothing which used to make a person happy, works anymore. It is also called as the 'Blues'. It is the most common stage after an event in our life which shocks us and stays in our minds for a long time. Often people mistake sadness for depression but that is not the case. The feeling of hopelessness and helplessness are the best signs that one is going into depression.

When someone is in such a state, it affects their normal actions and they are not able to get their self back together all by themselves. At such times, they need proper treatment for their state or this condition could last longer than it should. These symptoms of depression vary upon person to person. Here are some signs of depression:

  • The simple decision making and concentration tasks would seem difficult to do. Often short term memory is also reported by people in depression. A person in depression is unusually pessimistic and has constant negative thoughts in his mind. Weaker people also have a self destruction tendency when in depression.
  • Your feelings would be an all time low, you may feel sad all the time, not being able to enjoy the activities that were enjoyed before. Because of depression, you might feel a lack of motivation and would not be able to do even the most common tasks energetically.
  • The most obvious sign of depression is change in behavior. People tend to withdraw from social activities, lose their appetite, cry very often, etc.
  • In addition to above signs, there are possible physical changes as well. They might experience fatigue, less sleep, losing their appetite, feel dragged down when doing a task, aches in their body, restlessness and such physical conditions. It is also reported that some people who are in depression come down with high fever and body ache.

Recovering from depression could be a problem if you do not have anyone to support you. Depression drains all your energy and will power, making it slightly difficult to recover from that stage. Recovering from depression requires action, and thus you need constant and strong support from your friends and family to help you through the stage.

The first step to recovery is to build small goals. It need not be a big task, it could be a small thing like taking a short walk everyday in the morning. That is just the beginning, try to keep these small goals even if you are feeling disheartened. Celebrate your daily victory and treat yourself for achieving your goals once in a while. Start talking and spending time with your loved ones. This will help a lot to boost your confidence. Turn to your loved one for sharing your thoughts; they can help you go through the hard time.

The next step is to take care of yourself. Eat properly, even if you don't feel like it. Often people don't eat much when alone; make it a point to eat in your friends group or even your family. This will also increase the time you spend with them and you will eat more in their company. Go out once in a while, get involved in fun activities during the day. Adopt healthy habits like sleeping early so that you get at least 8 hours of sleep.

Practice relaxation procedures along with finding out the factors that stress you out. Exercising regularly is the next step. This will not only help you cope your depression but also keep you in shape. Eat healthy foods; don't indulge in the fattening foods, especially like chocolates during depression. Try to avoid thinking negatively, and control your emotions.
