Feeling sad at times during our lives is unavoidable. However, at times, that sadness can develop into full blown clinical depression.

When sadness develops into depression the sufferer will feel worthless, hopeless and often suicidal. These desperate feelings can last for weeks, months or even years.

Dealing with depression can seem impossible as just simple tasks become overwhelming. If the depressed person manages to get to a physician, they are likely to prescribe a SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) drug such as Prozac, Paxil, or Zoloft.

Sadly, it is now surfacing that many patients whom have been using SSRI's for long term treatment for depression are experiencing undesirable side effects, which are far worse than original trials indicated. These side effects are mainly excessive weight gain, insomnia and complete lack of sexual desire.

  • St Johns wort. St Johns wort may take 4 to 6 weeks to see full effects. Side effects include; indigestion, fatigue, dry mouth and dizziness. Protect eyes from sunlight, as St Johns wort will increase photosensitivity. Not recommended for pregnant women, or children, or patients with liver or kidney disease.

 

  • Omega-3, found in fish, mostly cold water fish such as salmon, anchovies, or sardines. There are also fish oil capsules, but these may interact with blood thinning drugs, such as warfarin or aspirin.

 

  • Folic acid is also very good for depression. This is found in green vegetables and fruit, beans, pulses and grain. It can also be taken as a supplement.

 

  • Chocolate and sweets can help because a rise in blood sugar will make you feel better. Although this is only temporary. Caffeine and alcohol may make you feel better for a short time, but later they will worsen your mood swings.

  • Most people do not get enough magnesium in their diet. Magnesium is also very good for depression, and good sources of magnesium are: pulses, nuts, whole grains and green vegetables. Magnesium levels are depleted by stress.

 

  • Siberian ginseng improves the balance of important neurotransmitters (including serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine) in the brain.   • Surprisingly enough, one of the best cures for depression, is sleep deprivation! If you can stay awake for a full night, you generally find that after only a few hours, you feel almost normal. Also, the following night, you will have a much better night's sleep. People who have a history of feeling really bad in the morning, are those who will most benefit from sleep deprivation. Sleep can actually cause depression. Depressed people will often feel that all they want to do is sleep, not realising that they will actually make themselves feel worse. Sleep is referred to as 'depressogenic' and wakefulness as 'antidepressogenic.'

 

  • Another way is to soak away the blues, is to mix the following bath essence:

       1/4 cup of honey

       3 drops Lavender essential oil

       3 drops in Ylang ylang essential oil

       2 drops Basil essential oil

       2 drops Geranium essential oil

       1 drop grapefruit essential oil

Mix the oils in the honey. Fill the bath tub with warm water, and then add the aromatic honey mixture. Stir well with your hands. Soak in tub for 20 to 30 minutes.
