Cat allergy is an allergic reaction that occurs in human beings due to some allergens produced by cats. These allergens are glycoprotein Fel d1 which is secreted by the cat's sebaceous glands and another type is Fel d4 which is found in their saliva. Fel d4 is a major product of the urinary protein gene. It is deposited onto the cat's dander as it grooms itself.

A study has found that 63% of the people who are allergic to cat have antibodies against Fel d4 than against Fel d1. Twenty-five percent of the people are allergic to cats and it is found that allergy to cats are very common as compared to dog allergy. The problem with cat allergy is that it is produced particularly by male non-neutered cats in large amounts and is partly under hormonal control. The dander which is responsible for cat allergy is airborne and sticky. It is found in public places even when there are no cats around. The size of such dander is extremely small and can be inhaled easily into the lungs, which further leads to allergic asthma. People who own cats and are allergic to cats are more likely to develop asthma symptoms.

The allergic reaction caused by cat allergy is a histamine reaction characterized by some of the symptoms mentioned below:

  • Coughing that is often dry and scratchy.
  • Wheezing
  • Chest tightening
  • Sneezing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Rash and watery eyes
  • Itching
  • Difficulty in breathing called dyspnea
  • Swelling of hands and feet
  • Chronic sore throat
  • In some case there is a report of elevation of skin when being scratched by a cat.
  • Puffy and swollen eyes
  • Skin reaction such as rashes and hives that occur upon contact with cats.

There are some home remedies for cat allergy that fortunately can help reducing the severity towards cat allergy.

  • A vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter is one of the home remedies for cat allergy to cut the amount of cat dander in your house. This High Efficient Particulate Air filter is designed to pick up allergens like pet danders. Unlike other vacuums this filters do not redistribute the dirt.
  • Another method is wiping the surfaces of your home with a damp cloth. This picks up any remaining allergens from the surfaces that might have settled on these surfaces. If there is any accident your cat may have in the floor then wipe it also if there is any urine stains. Since exposure to all these can also be one cause for cat allergy.
  • If you are allergic to your cat saliva than avoid it to lick you.
  • An air purifier can be another home remedy for cat allergy. It will not only put away the dander down but also filter it so that you don't breathe in any thing that causes allergic reaction.
  • Questing is a bioflavonoid that has histamines products. Take 250mg of Questing two times in a day. With this you need to take bromelain which will help to absorb the questing. Bromelain should also be taken twice a day. You can take this up to 4 weeks to notice whether it is working or not.
  • A home remedy for cat allergy or any type of allergy is found in caster oil. Take five drops of caster oil in a cup of any fruit or vegetable juice, or even plain water will work. Take this on an empty stomach every morning, is effective for all types of allergies.
  • Another type of home remedy for cat allergy is using lime. Half a lime is squeezed in a glass of warm water. A teaspoon of honey is used to sweeten the solution. This can also be taken in empty stomach and continued for several months. This remedy not only flushes the toxic but also give an anti toxic and anti allergic agent.
  • Bananas a day can be useful for those who are allergic and who so suffer from skin rashes or asthma. One or two bananas can be an effective home remedy for cat allergy. It should be avoided if you are allergic to fruits like bananas.
  • Allergy is due to weak immune system therefore building the immune system can help you in a great way to treat the allergy. A very common home remedy for any kind of allergy is preparing a vegetable juice. This can be done by making a juice of 500 ml of carrot juice or a combination of carrot, beet and cucumber juice. You can drink this once daily.
  • One of the best home remedy for cat allergy, that causes swelling is a hot or cold water massage. It provides a tremendous relief from swelling.
  • Take a pill of echinacea as this helps to improve your immune system.
  • Another home remedy is the Indian gooseberry which is rich in vitamin C. It helps in building the immunity system.
