Home Remedies for Constipation in Cats
Home remedies for constipation in cats give quick relief from the disorder. In case of constipation, the feces can't be excreted and they remain as it is in the colon. If this happens for more than two to three days, the feces become dry and hard like a stone. This puts the cat in misery. Under normal circumstances, the cat passes stool daily or once in two days. The exception is if the cat is fed with a low-residue diet.
Causes of Constipation:
- Hairballs
- Eating inedible food items such as glass, cloth, paper etc.
- Low fiber high meat protein diet
- High fiber diet
- Old age, as abdominal wall muscles grow weaker
- If colon and rectum is stretched
- Due to narrowing of pelvic canal
- Rectum getting narrow due to tumor growth
- Side effect of medication
- Drinking less water
Symptoms of Constipation in Cats:
- Watery stools are forced to pass around the tightly blocked stool in the colon
- Feel nausea about eating.
- Cats appear as if the stomach is swollen and look giddy and lethargic.
Home Remedies for Constipation in Cats:
- Feed the cat with high fiber content food. Fat content in such kind of food is less and fiber content is more which helps to pass the bowels easily.
- Feed the cat with high fibrous cat food which is dry and supplement it with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. As the cat eats dry food, it feels like drinking lot of water. This diet plan helps to overcome constipation.
- Laxatives: There is wide range of laxatives available for particular motive.
Give mild laxative to the cat along with the high fiber diet. As the laxatives softens the feces by absorbing water in the colon and helps defecation process.
- Stimulant laxatives: Dulcolax and Cisapride are proven laxatives than enables excretion of fecal mass.
- Lubricant laxatives: Laxatone is one of the lubricant laxatives. One can go for mineral oil too. It forms the thin layer at the interior of colon thereby stopping water loss from the stool. It helps to pass the stool easily.
- Emollient laxatives: Docusate sodium (DSS), decrease water absorbtion from feces and prevents stool getting hard and dry.
- Osmotic laxatives: Lactose is an osmotic laxative that motivates the fluid secretion in the large intestine. It accelerates the expulsion of feces.
- Nutrifyba: Nutrifyba 250 g is a proven supplement that helps normal bowel function.
- Katalax: If hairball is jammed in the digestive path, Katalax is very effective medicine available. Katalax contains soft paraffin, cod liver oil and malt extract that helps to excrete out the hairball.
- Groom or brush the cat regularly, especially in case of long haired cats. It is a preventive action to prevent hair ball intake of the cat.
- Incorporate cooked vegetables like beans and pumpkin, as well as fruits along with the regular food. It helps to get rid of constipation.
Home remedies for constipation in cats are similarly thought over like human beings. The same dietary changes are followed like increasing high fiber intake and plenty of water. As far as the laxatives, medicines and their dosages are concerned, they are designed considering anatomy of cat, like digestive system of cats; and activities they undergo.
