Causes and Symptoms: Both adults and children can be affected with clogged ear. In fact, 90% of the cases of ear pain in children are due to clogged ear. The causes of clogged ears commonly are sinus infections, tension, cold, allergies, muscle and a buildup of earwax. Sometimes, when water enters your ears, it causes clogging of ears. Generally, it happens while swimming or turning ear upwards when taking a shower. For young patients, clogged ears can develop due to improper bathing technique and the presence of fluids in the ear.

Clogging of ear may cause throbbing pain, diminished hearing, irritability, discomfort, and complete hearing loss in some cases. Some people may also hear relentless sounds when their ears are clogged.

  • Home Remedies for Ear Clogging: Untreated situation of ear clogging can lead to severe infection or pain. It is good to treat clogged ears as soon as you notice the symptoms. Using home remedies to treat your problem is the best way as there is no chance of getting side effects with these natural remedies and is costless to do.

  • Yawn: Sometimes, when pressure of your surrounding changes, it develops clogged ears. It happens especially while landing and taking off an airplane. This pressure can be slowly relieved by making you yawn.

  • Heating Pad: You can apply a moistened heating pad to the outside of clogged ears to relief the pain. Get a towel and dampen it with warm water. Squeeze it light and use it as a heating pad.

  • Hydrogen Peroxide: the most common substance used, as home remedy for clogged ear is hydrogen peroxide. One drop of hydrogen peroxide used in the ear helps to fight ear clogging by breaking up the earwax. Do not worry if you see bubbling wax coming out of the ear. Hydrogen peroxide is available at the nearby chemist is not costly at all.

  • Nose-Blowing Manner: If you are suffering with sinus problem, you may also face problem of clogged ears due to sinusitis. In such situation, avoid blowing your nose too hard. Keep your mouth open when you blow your nose to help avoid ear clogging.

  • Pure Grain Alcohol: Applying a couple of drops of pure grain alcohol to your choked ear will also make a good remedy. Use this remedy twice a day for better relief.

  • Olive Oil: Olive oil is used for so many purposes and here it can be used as an earwax softener. Boil two to three tablespoons of olive oil and allow it to become cool. Use it as earwax softener when it reaches body temperature. This will help to make the earwax soft and will make it easier to remove it for you.

  • Hot-Steam Bath: If you are feeling pressure in ears, hot steam bath will work like a treatment to unclog ear. The steam will create a relieving pressure around your ear and will ease your ear pain. You can lie down in a tub of warm water for 10 - 15 minutes to take steam. Make sure that the water temperature is tolerable to body.

  • Ear Safety: Ear is a very sensitive organ of body and a small injury may give you a big harm. While treating clogged ears, do not ever use sharp objects, such as a hairpin, pencil, pen or safety pin. If your eardrum is injured, you can get permanent loss of hearing sensitivity

  • Swallow: If your ear is clogged just due to pressure, swallowing frequently can help to unblock the pressure.

  • Uplift the Head: simply uplifting the head to about six inches will effect well to treat clogged ears in kids. This will normalize the pressure and will drain the water as well.

  • Chewing Gum: A continuous motion of jaw helps in reducing blockage in your ears. Use a chewing gum and keep chewing it for 15 - 20 minutes. It is a good idea to chew a gum when you are in flight. This is also considered a good mouth exercise.

  • Glycerin: Apart from exercises, glycerin is also a way of treating choked ears. Use few drops of glycerin in ear for quick relief.
