Home remedies for flies using bag of water and home made flypaper:

  • Hang clear plastic bags of water near entryways. This is very useful for people who live on farms and those who operate fruit stands. They use these home remedy to control flies on a regular basis.
  • You will need a brown paper bag, string, scissors and a shallow pan. You will also require 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, ½ cup of sweet maple syrup and 2 tablespoons of white sugar. Mix all these ingredients in a shallow pan. Cut the brown paper bag into 1 inch wide strips. Dig a hole at the top of each strip. Then thread a string through each hole. Immerse the strips in the sticky mixture for about 8 hours. Take out the strips from the mixture after they stop dripping. Hang them in flies' active areas. If you are tired of spending money on fly paper make your own at home.

Home remedies for flies using margosa leaves, raw garlic and cinnamon pepper:

  • Collect a pile of Margosa leaves at the front door or yard. Set the leaves on fire. Let the herbal smoke hunt the flies. It will kill the flies.
  • Combine cinnamon pepper and raw garlic with powdered charcoal. Spray the mixture in the kitchen and the flies' active areas in the house. Insects do not come back in places of danger.

Home remedies for flies using dry soap, plant basil:

  • Spray dry soap into garbage cans after they have been cleaned. Allow to dry. It acts as a very good fly repellent.
  • Place tansy or basil near the doors of your home or to the flies' active areas. It will also repel the flies. You can also set a pot of these plants on table or on the window sill to reduce the number of flies inside the room.

Home remedies for flies using essential oil of clove, essential oil of lavender:

  • Clove essential oil is an excellent repellent. Dilute it with a body lotion or olive oil and use on your own or pet's skin.
  • Place a sponge in a saucer and steep it with lavender essential oil to repel the flies.

Home remedies for flies using fly-offensive plants:

  • Citronella has fly repelling properties. Other plants that have fly repelling status are lavender, false indigo, basil, elderberry and mint. You can place these plants inside your home or outside the door to distract the flies.

Home remedies for flies using liquid dish soap, water, peppermint:

  • Combine 2 tablespoons of your regular liquid dish soap with water. Shake it gently to mix. Spray the solution on the flies. This is a very safe remedy as it contains no chemicals and children and pets will not be harmed.
  • You can also spray your yard with peppermint to control flies.

Preventive Measures to Combat Flies:

  • The lids of the trash cans should fit and seal firmly to remove any space for flies to enter. Put lids also on wastebaskets indoors. Do not allow any rotten matter to stay.
  • Do not keep the compost heap moist. Avoid adding oil products or meat to the compost.
  • It is essential to drain the water as often as possible. Flies are attracted to standing water and moisture. Look out for dirty water and even your bird baths.
  • Cover all your fruits. Fruit flies are small gnat-size flying insects that appear magically after a few days on fruits left open. Place fruits in a muslin cloth bag to prevent fruit flies from sitting on them.
  • Always check for leaks. Fill gaps in your doors, windows and even air conditioning unit which serve as insect entry ways with a can of expandable foam. Change or patch broken screens on doors and windows.

These home remedies for flies are good alternative to traps, chemical sprays and store-bought flypaper. These home remedies are inexpensive, easy and effective. Also follow the preventive measures to keep the flies at bay.
