The accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity is termed as Ascites. This is a gastroenterological term and in medical term is called the peritoneal cavity fluid, hydro peritoneum, fluid excess, abdominal dropsy. Ascites do not have any specific symptoms and especially when it is in the milder form. Depending on the fluid accumulation, there is an increase in the abdominal girth and also the size which can be easily noticed. The other symptoms of ascites are listed below:
- Abdominal pain
- Discomfort
- Bloating
All the above symptoms are seen frequently when the ascites become larger. Other symptoms include:
- Shortness of breath can also occur when the ascites become large because of the increased pressure on the diaphragm that causes the fluid to move across the diaphragm.

Types of Ascites
There are two types of ascites which are based on the quantity of protein found in the fluid which can be transudative or exudative. Another common term used in ascites is Serum Ascites Albumin Gradient or commonly known as SAAG. This has been developed depending on the amount of albumin in the ascetic fluid.

Diagnose are usually made by ultrasound scan of the abdomen, or by blood tests and also the fluid can be removed directly by a needle or paracentesis.
