A burn is a skin injury which is caused by heat, chemicals, electricity, chemicals and radiation of friction. Most burns involve and affect the outer epidermal tissue. However, in rare cases it hampers the deeper tissues like the bone, blood vessels and muscle. It can be extremely painful and may result in disabling scar and disfiguring of the skin. Nevertheless, you can always try some home remedies for burns which are of the minor form.

The damage of the burn depends on the depth and location of the surface where the burn is involved. Burns are classified under three categories:

  • First degree of burn which is superficial involves local inflammation of the skin.
  • Second degree of burn involves a deeper effect and results in additional pain. The skin becomes red, inflamed and blisters appear on the burn skin.
  • Third degree of burn is deeper burns that involves several skin layers and finally make the skin area senseless. This is because of the damage in blood vessels and nerves. The appearance of third degree of burns is white and leathery which tend to be painless.

Causes of Burns

A wide variety of external substance can cause burns which may result from the following causes:

  • Chemicals have strong bases and acids that can cause severe burn. These chemicals include compounds like sodium hydroxide, sulfuric acid and silver nitrate.
  • Electricity can cause exogenous shock which may result from uncontrolled short circuit that may result in the skin burn.
  • UV light can result in radiation burns of skin.
  • Scalding are a result of hot water and any other liquids or steam.

Symptoms of Burns

When the skin is burned, the following symptoms can be noticed:

  • Skin color changes which can be pink, red, brown, white and black skin.
  • Formation of blisters
  • Pain around the burned area and this depends on the severity of the burn.

Other symptoms of burn such as airway include:

  • Burned nose hair
  • Soot in the nose and mouth
  • Voice change
  • Wheezing
  • Sore throat

Tests and Diagnose of Burns

Burns can be easily diagnosed. However, a doctor' main concern will be in determining the size, thickness of the burn and whether any smoke or fumes of chemical is inhaled. The symptoms will help to examine the degree of burn.

Medications and drugs are available to treat burns depending on the severity. Nonetheless, you can always try some effective home remedies for burns for minor and partially thickness burns.

Home Remedies for Burns using water, honey and yogurt

  • The first and foremost thing you can do in a case of first degree burns is to wash the affected area immediately.
  • Honey can also be used on the affected area will heal it quickly and properly. This is one of the best home remedies for burns.
  • Another effective way to treat burns is to apply two tablespoon of yogurt on the affected area and keep it for twenty minutes. This will reduce the inflammation and also help for quick healing.

Home Remedies for Burns using egg whites, onion and whole milk

  • Egg whites can also be used for treating burns. Take some portion of egg whites and gently apply on the affected area and keep it for sometime before washing off.
  • Mild burns can be relieved immediately by cutting an onion and placed on the affected burn area.
  • Whole milk is one of the old home remedies for burns. Soak the burned area in the milk for at least twenty minutes to heal the burn.

Home Remedies for Burns using Aloe Vera and Lavender oil

  • Aloe Vera is a proven home remedy for burns on skins. Take this in the paste form or gel form and apply on the burns and keep it for few hours.
  • You can also use some essential lavender oil on the area. This will help dissipating the pain associated with burns within a short span of time. You can use this oil several or few times depending on the severity of the burn. Apart from the excellent fragrance it also does not leave any scar behind.
  • You can also use Aloe Vera with a small portion of lavender oil and after mixing them well you can apply on the affected area .This will give an immediate relief.

Home Remedies for Burns using papaya and henna leaves

  • A ripe papaya can used to treat the burns as this is supposed to contain enzymes which removes dead cells from the affected area. This can further be used to rejuvenate the skin by bringing up new skin cells.
  • For immense relief of the burn skin, henna leaves are also good to heal the burns. Use henna leaves and mix them in water to make a paste. You can also use mustard oil. The finely grind leaves should be applied on the burn area and be kept for few hours. This is one of the simple home remedies for burns.

Home Remedies for Burns using coconut oil and leaves of red berries

  • Prepare a mixture of coconut oil and celery leaves and use them on mild form of burns. Heat the oil along with the extract celery leaves and use on the affected area to provide an instant relief.
  • Tender leaves of red berries along with yogurt should be used to prepare a paste. This is then used on the burned area which will heal it quickly and not leave a scar as well.

Home remedies for burns should be used only in minor burns like that of first degree burn. Medical assistance is however required for major burns like that of second and third degree of burn.
