Home Remedies for Chickenpox

Chickenpox is one of a highly contagious ailment. It is also known as Varicella as it was caused by varicella-zoster virus. The common victims of chickenpox are children and it is a condition which occurs one or other times in childhood. Sometimes adults may do get it. However, there are some suggested home remedies for chickenpox which are beneficial to reduce the condition.

It usually starts with a skin rash and gradually develops on the body and head. The rash appears on the second day after the person gets the infection. Finally the rash forms into blisters which then burst and scabs over. It is highly communicable and easily spreads through cough and sneezes. Pregnant women and people who have a suppressed immune system have a higher tendency and are at a risk of severe complication. The incubation period of the disease is between 2-3 weeks. During winter and spring season, people are more prone to get the disease and become infected.

Causes of Chickenpox

Some of the common causes for the disease are listed below:

  • Contact with broken blisters of chickenpox.
  • Herpes zoster virus
  • Inhaling droplets of airborne virus of chickenpox
  • Poor and weak immune system

Symptoms of Chickenpox

The common and well-known signs of chickenpox are:

  • An itch red rash that resembles an insect bites.
  • Liquid-filled blisters that are tiny which can break open and have crust over.

Usually the rash of chickenpox has three stages which are given below:

  • Raised pink or red bumps (papules)
  • These bumps are filled with liquid called blisters (vesicles)
  • And lastly these vesicles have crust over and scab

There is a possibility that all the above stages can occur at the same time.

Following the rash there are other symptoms like:

  • Fever
  • Abdominal pain accompanied with loss of appetite
  • A mild headache or severe headache
  • A dry cough
  • Irritability and uneasiness

Treatments and drugs are given to people who have high complications from chickenpox. Antihistamine may be given to relieve from itching. Nevertheless, there are some very effective home remedies for chickenpox which can be taken as a better option for treating it.

Home Remedies for Chickenpox using brown vinegar and oatmeal

  • Brown vinegar is a powerful treatment for chickenpox. Prepare a remedy by using a half cup of the vinegar and add in warm bathwater. This reduces the irritation and heals the lesion quickly.
  • Oatmeal is also useful and is a natural remedy that relieves the itchy problem. This effective bath can be prepared by cooking two cups of oatmeal in two liters of water. Cook it for twenty minutes. After this make a poultice by putting a cotton bag with a string tied to the top. Allow this bag to float on tub of warm water. Swoosh until the bathwater becomes turbid. Ensure that the water goes over the scalds and yet the pouch of oatmeal remains in the tub.

Home Remedies for Chickenpox using baking soda and green pea

  • Baking soda controls the itching caused by chickenpox. In a glass of water, add some baking soda and mix it well. Soak a sponge in this water mixture and apply gently on the affected areas. This reduces itching and prevents the eruptions caused by itching. This also helps in healing the lesions.
  • The water used for cooking green peas can be used relieving the skin irritation caused by chickenpox. This is one of the effective home remedies for chickenpox.

Home Remedies for Chickenpox using honey and herbal tea

  • Honey can be used for external application. The affected area can be smeared with honey that can heal the disease in few days.
  • One of the proven treatments for chickenpox is a mild herbal tea. This tea is prepared from herbs like basil leaves, chamomile, marigold and lemon balm. To this a pinch of honey, lemon and cinnamon are added. Drink this tea several times a day to heal the disease.

Home Remedies for Chickenpox using sandalwood and neem leaves

  • Sandalwood oil is also effective for treating chickenpox. Apply the oil on the rashes from the beginning of the rashes till the last days as this would help to prevent the scars and blemishes on the skin.
  • Neem leaves are also beneficial for chickenpox. You can prepare a water bath by immersing a handful of leaves in the water and use it while taking bath. This gives a good healing effect and cures the skin irritation.
  • Mudpacks are one of most suggested home remedies for chickenpox. It can also be used on the abdomen can be beneficial and heal the symptoms of chickenpox.

Home Remedies for Chickenpox using vitamin E oil and vegetable soup

  • Vitamin E oil is effective and should be used to rub the skin. This reduces the irritation and also heals the skin. The marks and scars fade away by using the oil.
  • Prepare a soup from carrots and coriander that helps in the treatment of chickenpox. Chop 100 gm of carrot and 60 gm of coriander and put this in three cups of water. Boil this and add salt and pepper for taste. Thereafter, drink the soup once a day and continue this until you are healed from chickenpox.

Apart from all the home remedies for chickenpox, the patient should build the immune system by having a well-balanced diet that should include raw vegetables and fresh fruits. Finally keep the surrounding clean and well-ventilated so as to breathe in fresh air.
