  • Baking soda is very effective to kill them. You can prepare a mixture using powdered sugar and baking soda in equal parts. The sugar attracts the cockroaches whereas the baking soda can cause internal destruction which gets mixed with their stomach acid.
  • Another trap can be prepared using petroleum jelly. Apply a considerable amount of the jelly in a beaker or jar and keep some food items inside so as to attract the pests. Keep this overnight, the next morning they get stuck to the jar and are not able to escape. Discard the content carefully in a bucket of soapy water and flush them out.
  • A common method to get rid of them is by using cornstarch. Use an equal amount of cornstarch and plaster of Paris and spread this evenly onto the crevices wherever you see the pests.

Other methods which are readily available in the kitchen are listed below:

  • Lemons are also effective to get rid of cockroaches. For this you simply need to add the juice extracted from four lemons with two liters of water. Use this to mop the floor. It is said these pests cannot withstand the smell of lemons. Besides this, the lemon also helps to clean the floor.
  • Garlic onion and pepper mix is also effective to get rid of these tiny creatures. Use one clove of garlic, an onion and a two teaspoon of cayenne pepper and add all of these to half a bucket of water. Mix them well and further add a tablespoon of liquid soap. Use this mixture and spray them in the places where the roaches appear frequently.
  • Another common kitchen ingredient is bay leaves. These leaves are roach repellant and you can use these sachets of bay leaves and put them in the closets, cupboards and drawers.

Some other methods to control these pests and eliminate them are:

  • Caulking the water pipes gets rid of their routes to the kitchen and other living spaces. This is effective because the cockroaches congregate into the kitchen and the bathrooms by using the holes on the water pipes and use them as a means of transport.
  • A bleach pinesol mix is also effective to get rid of the cockroaches. You need to add two cups of the bleach with two cups of pinesol and one cup of boiling water. Use this solution and pour on the area where you see maximum number of cockroaches. Wait for about 10-15 minutes in order to allow the reaction and finally get rid of the pests.
  • Coffee grounds are also effective for trapping these pests. Use a half filled jar with coffee grounds and water. The scent of the coffee attracts the pests and the water will drown them when the pests climb the jar. This is by far the simplest way to get rid of these creatures.
  • Frequent vacuum around the dark corners of the house, the cabinets and the drawers will remove the dead cockroaches.
  • Bleach can also help to eradicate these pests. Pour this into the sinks and tubs that will dissuade the cockroaches and will prevent them to travel along the drain pipes into your home.

Preventive measures to get rid of cockroaches

Some of the measures you can try out so that the cockroaches do not enter your house by the following ways:

  • Try to find out from where they are entering and then seal the entrance with a substance that can cover the entire hole.
  • The house should be kept well vacuumed and clean as well. Ensure that the dirty dishes are not left overnight. The household dirt should be trashed regularly.
  • The clutter in the basement, house and attic should be eliminated time to time as roaches love to nest on such kind of clutter.
