Home Remedies for Cold

Common cold is not a very serious disorder but a person gets irritated, as one can not follow normal routine with at ease. Feeling of soreness, congestion of nasal passage, minor headache are the things which bother a lot. Sometimes a person may feel feverish. Home remedies for cold suggested are followed from generations, well proven and easy to follow.

Many ingredients which we use in our diet possess miraculous medicinal values. One should be aware of that and make the most of it.

Home Remedies for Cold:

  • Lemon: Lemon, a rich source of vitamin C, a proven detoxifier is known as immunity booster. Squeeze one lemon in a glass of warm water. Add and stir one teaspoon of honey. Drink it two times a day. It is one of the traditional and easy home remedy for cold.

  • Garlic: Garlic is used as tastemaker in cousins. Garlic is a very good antiseptic and blessed with much more medicinal values. Garlic soup gives quick relief from common cold. It opens the respiratory passage, and reduces the fever.

    • Take 3-4 cloves of garlic, chop them and boil in a cup of water, approx. 150 ml. Drink the soup once a day.
    • Mix 5-6 drops of garlic oil, one teaspoon of onion juice in a cup of water, approx.150 ml. Drink it 3 -4 times a day.
    • Take ½ garlic clove and a pinch of pepper powder. Swallow it with warm water.

  • Turmeric: Turmeric is an excellent antiseptic and an effective home remedy for cold.

    • Running cold: Inhale turmeric fumes. It is a type of Nasya, the form of Panchakarma, from ayurved.
    • Throat Irritation: Mix half teaspoon turmeric powder in a half cup of milk. Boil it on low flame. Drink it twice a day.

  • Tamarind and pepper Rasam: Rasam is a typical South Indian recipe. Soak 50 mg. tamarind for an hour and prepare tamarind extract. Dilute it in 2 cups of water, approx. 250 ml. Boil it for 3-5 min. and add ½ a teaspoon of black pepper powder. Add 1 teaspoon of clarified butter or ghee. Drink it hot. It clears the nasal blockages as nose and eyes water. Drink it 2 -3 times a day.

  • Ginger: Prepare the decoction of ginger as follows. Take 10 g ginger, chop it well and boil in a cup of water. Strain it, add ½ a teaspoon of sugar and drink it hot. Drink it twice a day. You can add ginger or dry ginger powder while making tea too. It is very effective home remedy for cold.

  • Lady's Finger: It is very effective for dry cough and throat irritation. Due to high mucilage content, lady's finger relieves pain, irritation and swelling. Prepare decoction by boiling 100 g. chopped lady's finger in ½ a liter of water. You can inhale the steam released from this decoction.

  • Honey and bitter gourd: Mix on teaspoon of bitter gourd paste with one teaspoon of honey. Consume it before going to bed. This is excellent remedy for cold.

  • Honey and water: Mix one tablespoon honey in warm water and drink at least four times a day. Keep your throat warm. This is an excellent remedy for sore throat.

  • Eucalyptus Oil: Eucalyptus oil reduces chest congestion. It is highly effective to treat cough, cold and respiratory disorders. It is an excellent germicide and blessed with antibacterial properties.

    • Massage your chest and neck with few drops of eucalyptus oil.
    • You can put few drops of eucalyptus oil in water, boil it and inhale the fumes.
    • Put few drops on your pillow before going to sleep.
    • You can use the oil mixture of eucalyptus, rosemary, and lemon and diffuse it in you bedroom before sleeping.

  • Put the mixture of 4 drops of lavender essence oil 4 drops of pine essential oil, 3 drops of peppermint essential oil and 7 drops of eucalyptus oil on a cotton ball and inhale the vapors. It is an excellent home remedy to get relief from congestion in the nasal passage.

  • Gargling: Gargling gives relief from sore throat

    • Add one teaspoon of salt in warm water and gargle with it 3 -4 times a day.
    • Put one teaspoon of tea powder in a glass of water and boil it. Allow it to cool down till warm and gargle with it. Tea contains an astringent, which reduces prickle in the throat.
    • Soak one tablespoon raspberry leaves in 2 cups of hot water, approx. 250 ml. Add one teaspoon of honey to it and stir well. Bring it to room temperature and gargle with it.

      Prepare tea with one tablespoon of fenugreek seeds, black peppercorns (7 in no) and one teaspoon of crushed ginger. Boil it in 2 cups of water until it becomes one cup. Drink this tea at least twice a day, to get quick relief from cold.

Homoeopathic Medicines for Cold:
