Causes of Dog Gas:

Flatulence in dogs is rarely a serious problem which is usually caused by bacteria in the digestive tract. These bacteria breaks the food particles and results in the production of gas. This can be quite disruptive and annoying at times. However, there are some breeds of dogs that are more prone to flatulence than others. Some of the common factors that contribute to the causes of dog gas are:

  • The diet can be a main factor of dog gas. The quality and brand of food that your pets are fed on may not be digested well before it reaches the large intestines of the dogs.
  • Another possible cause for the gas in your pets may be due to the negative chemical reaction that occurs in the digestive system that leads to such gas problems.
  • If you have notice that your pets gulp down their food quickly then this may be another reason that produces the gas. In doing so, they swallow a large amount of air that may eventually turn into dog gas.
  • Aging can also be a reason for the dog to produce frequent gas.

Symptoms of Dog Gas:

  • Mild abdominal discomfort
  • If you rub the its intestinal area, it will pass the gas repeatedly

Severe symptoms of dog gas

  • Diarrhea
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Severe bloating
  • Weight loss

If your dog gets these severe symptoms, consult your veterinary doctor immediately!

Some of the suggested home remedies to cure dog gas are listed below:

  • In most of the pet's food there are about 25% of soybeans. A lot of difference can be made if you change the food with less content of soy or no soy at all. Make sure that the food you give your dog should not contain artificial flavors, colorants and preservatives. Eliminate soy products as these are loaded with proteins that cannot be easily digested and result in dog gas.
  • Most adult dogs can digest only a tiny amount of milk. Milk can be a major factor for producing gas in dogs. The best thing you can do is take away the milk for few days and see if the condition improves or not.
  • Yogurt, as many of you may know contain digestion friendly bacteria that are known to lessen flatulence. For small dogs add half teaspoon of yogurt and or large dogs add one tablespoon of yogurt in their diet.
  • Activated charcoal absorbs nutrients and gas from the digestive tract and is one of the best known remedies to solve the problem of dog gas. All you need to do here is add a pinch or two of the powdered charcoal in their diet. For larger dogs add half a teaspoon of the powder. However, this should not be used for more than 2-3 days at a time.
  • Table scraps or changing the dog food too often can lead to dog gas. Hence avoid giving them too many doggie biscuits that may disturb their digestive track.

Prevention and tips for dog gas:

  • Exercise can help your dog to move the gas outside the house and it also stimulates their bowel movement and as such lessens the gas episodes inside their house.
  • Teach your dog to eat slowly. You can train them by simply placing a rubber ball in the middle of their bowl. This will force them to eat around and also slow down their eating. In the market you may get bowls that are specially designed for such kind of dogs. Such bowls have built-in 'bumps' that can slow down their eating considerably.
  • Encourage them for an active lifestyle.
  • Give them smaller and frequent meals and feed them in a non-competitive environment which is quiet and isolated. This will prevent any kind of quick build up gas.
  • You can also change their source for carbohydrates and proteins and see if it works or not.
  • Do not feed the food you eat as this may speed the flatulence in dogs.
  • Monitor your dog's diet regularly and eliminate the substances that are responsible for producing dog gas.
  • Lastly, visit the veterinary doctor for a routine check up and consult with him or her and discuss about it.

In addition to these home remedies for dog gas, play with your dog regularly as this will not only improve their condition but also make your bonding with them stronger!
