Freckles are areas of increased pigmentation or melanin in the skin. These are small pigment spots which are flat. They vary from red to tan to brown color. Freckles develop primarily due to sun exposed areas of the body. The most common areas for freckles are the nose and shoulders. However, only in rare cases freckles can develop to skin cancer. It is common in fair skin people when compared to a dark skin because the tendency for light skin to burn is more and henceforth are at higher risk of skin cancer. Nonetheless, you can always try out some safe and simple home remedies for freckles.

Causes of Freckles

The major cause of freckle is melanin which is responsible for giving the skin color. Other causes are:

  • Excess hitting of the sun
  • Dark skin appears during pregnancy
  • Aging also called age spots, lentigines or liver spots
  • Hereditary factors
  • Skin pigment or melanin
  • Skin cancer
  • Hormonal disorder
  • Fair skin which are highly sensitive

  • Appearance of red hair

What is the difference between moles and freckles? Freckles and moles both occur on the skin and are a result of excess pigment or melanin in the skin. However, they are not same and have a great difference. Moles are a cluster of pigment cells which are often small, dark brown and range in colors and sizes. They can occur anywhere in the body and unlike moles it can be present on the body at the time of birth. Moles can become more prominent with age and also darken due to the repeated exposure to the sun. This can also be a result of hormonal change that can occur during pregnancy and are harmless.

Types of Freckles

Basically there are two types of freckles which are given below:

  • Ephelides which are flat and light brown spots that usually appears during the summer and gradually fades during the winter. The cause of these freckles may be hereditary.
  • Lentigines are also small, tan, black or brown spots which is generally darker then the ephelides which unlike the latter does not fade away during the winters.

Home Remedies for Freckles using Horseradish and sour milk

  • The juice extracted from horseradish is highly beneficial for freckles. You can either dab horseradish or its vinegar along with oatmeal on the affected area. These are also effective to reduce the symptoms of freckles.
  • Sour milk is also effective for the treatment of freckles. It contains natural lactic acid which promotes the gentle peeling of the skin and henceforth reduces the irritation and dryness of the skin.

Home Remedies for Freckles using parsley and lemon juice

  • For application purpose, you can add equal quantities of parsley juice and orange juice along with lemon juice on the affected area. This will reduce the visibility of freckles and is very effective for the treatment for freckles.
  • One of the best and also the simplest home remedies for freckles is lemon juice. This has some natural bleaching properties that helps in reducing the dark spots and skin

Home Remedies for Freckles using castor oil and honey

  • To treat the freckles apply on the affected area some castor oil or vitamin E oil and keep it overnight. This is beneficial for the treatment of freckles.
  • You can also prepare a remedy by dissolving a little amount of sugar in lemon juice and mix them well. With the help of a fresh brush apply the mixture on the affected area. This is an effective treatment which reduces freckles to a great extend.

Home Remedies for Freckles using honey and vegetable and fruit mask

  • Honey is a perfect medicine for any type of skin problem. You can prepare an excellent remedy using some warm honey and stir it in a little quantity of wheat germ. You can apply this on the affected area and gently tap the area with your fingers. Keep the application for 15 minutes and wash it off with either cold or warm water.
  • Another home remedy is making a face mask made from fruits and vegetables are excellent for the treatment of freckles. Fruits like strawberry, cucumbers, apricots a red currant can be used for making some useful face packs which can reduce freckles.

Home Remedies for Freckles using mustard and turmeric

  • Another very simple and also beneficial home remedies for freckles are prepared from mustard. Grind a small amount of mustard and add in a half cup of milk. Use this as a face pack or on the affected area and keep it overnight. The next morning wash it off with either cold or warm water.
  • Turmeric is also excellent for the treatment of skin problems. You can add equal quantity of turmeric and sesame seeds and make a paste out it. Apply on the affected area and keep it for sometime before washing them off.

Home Remedies for Freckles using onions and buttermilk

  • Onions are also helpful for the treatment of freckles. Slice an onion particularly a red onion and rub gently on the affected area. Continue this for a week two times a day to reduce freckles.
  • A common and one of the simple home remedies for freckles is the use of buttermilk. Application of buttermilk on the freckles is beneficial and reduces the condition.

Apart from all the home remedies freckles, eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables which have high concentration of vitamins that helps the skin growth and prevents freckles.
