Home Remedies for Hoarse Voice
A raspy and rough voice is called hoarse voice which is a condition caused by the inflammation of the larynx. A prolonged yelling, speaking or singing can cause a hoarse voice. This is also known as laryngitis and may be a result of some illness like flu or bronchitis. The major cause of the condition is by exposure to some irritants like tobacco and alcohol. This is a minor problem which can be treated with some home remedies for hoarse voice. You don't have to run to a doctor to treat a hoarse voice unless it takes a little longer time to heal.
Causes of Hoarse Voice are:
- Viral or bacterial infection that may be due to cold
- Irritants like smoking, alcohol and chewing of betel nut can lead to hoarse voice
- Drinking ice cold water, beverage, ice cream and fried food can cause hoarse voice.
- Dusty and dry environments where a person may work continuously can lead to hoarse voice.
- A recent study has suggested that suffering from heartburn and digestive problem can be one of the causes.
- Speaking continuously for quite some time may be another reason for hoarse voice.
Some of the stuffs you can try out at home are listed below:
- Apple cider vinegar is a folk remedy which is good for the treatment of hoarse voice. Add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in half glass of water and drink this every hour. This will reduce the hoarseness.
- Another way to treat the problem is by heating a bowl of water. Use a towel and drape across the shoulders. Now lean forward to breathe in the steam bath for sometime. This moistens the dry tissues of the nose and throat and helps you from the hoarse voice. In addition to this you can add few drops of eucalyptus oil or pepper mint in the water that will be more beneficial.
- You can also prepare a remedy by adding some black pepper in a cup of milk. Mix these well and drink this twice a day to feel better. You can also add a bit of sugar to this.
- If you want to try some herbs then you can go for basil leaves. Extract some juice of basil leaves and mix these with a tablespoon of honey and take 4 or 5 times a day.
- Ginger is by far the best remedy for not only sore throat but also for hoarse voice. Peel the skin of a ginger root and slice and put them in a pot of water. Allow this to boil for sometime. Finally add two tablespoon of honey for sweetening purpose. This will help you to clear the throat and may give a tingling effect while swallowing.
- Further you can also try out a mixture of lemon and honey. Have a tablespoon of the mixture to soothe your throat and treat the hoarse voice.
- A soup prepared from either mixed vegetables or chicken is perfect to treat hoarse voice. This can give you the comfort and also remove the clog in the sinus that is collected in the throat and helps you to breathe better.
- The best way to heal this condition faster is by relaxation. Allow your voice to rest and try not to talk much or even whisper.
- A mixture of turmeric and milk is also effective for hoarse voice. Boil a glass of milk and once it comes to boil then add a pinch of turmeric powder. Drink this to see some instant relief.
- Drink plenty of water to keep the vocal cords moisten and this will help to fasten the healing process. Go for warm water as this will help to cure the hoarse voice.
- Another method is sipping in some onion syrup. For this you'll need onion syrup, lemon and honey. Cut down some slice of onion and put them in water and allow this to simmer until you get onion syrup. To this syrup add some honey and a dash of lemon.
Tips that will heal hoarse voice are:
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol and smoking as they may one of the factors that lead to hoarse voice.
- Allergy may be one of the factors for hoarse voice. So first know to what you allergic to and then try avoiding them.
- Take maximum rest and massage your neck, shoulder and jaws with some warm oil before you go to sleep.
- Finally try avoiding pressurizing your vocal cords. This may lead to gruffness and make the situation worse.
- Avoid spicy food like pickles, spicy food and curds.
- And do not wash your hair or go for head bath as this may make the situation all the more worse.
If the above home remedies for hoarse voice is not working out within a couple of week's time then consult an ENT doctor. This may be a symptom for a big problem so never hesitate to go to the doctor thinking it to be a minor problem.
