Home Remedies for Sebaceous Cyst

Sebaceous cyst is also referred to as wen, which usually occurs below the surface of the skin. The uppermost lining of the cyst resemble to that of a hair follicle. It is believed that many natural and home remedies for sebaceous cyst can treat it effectively.

Many people may refer sebaceous cyst to an epidermoid cyst which are small bumps that develop beneath the skin of the trunk, face, neck and sometimes on the genital areas as well. But in the true sense, sebaceous cysts are less common than epidermoid cysts.

The materials inside the cysts are fatty, white and semi-solid material that fills this sac-like structure. The material is called the sebum. The common areas affected by this are the scalp, scrotum, chest and back. Don't be surprised, if you observe the cysts elsewhere on the body.

Causes of Sebaceous Cyst:

The common causes for this type of cyst are listed below:

  • Blocked sebaceous glands
  • Swollen hair follicles
  • Excessive testosterone production
  • Hereditary causes which includes Gardner's syndrome and basal cell nevus syndrome

Another cause that has been reported to cause sebaceous cyst are Dermatobia hominis.

Symptoms for Sebaceous Cyst:

  • Round or tiny bumps that are easy to move with the fingers
  • These are white and yellow in fair skin people but in darker skin these may appear as pigmented cysts
  • These can occur anywhere on the body which includes the fingernails as well

The cyst sometimes has a central opening that contains a hair follicle from which the cyst originally grows. The cyst can occasionally lead to infection which may give you the following signs and symptoms:

  • The thick, yellow material that drains out from the cyst gives a foul odor
  • There may be swelling, redness and tenderness around the cyst

There is no need for medical treatment if the cyst is mild. In fact some home based remedies can work as well as medications or sometimes can be better than the contemporary medicines.

  • As the sebum is a solidified mass,it can be melt down by heating up the cyst. Once the sebum melts, with the help of some pressure the liquid can be diffused back to the blood stream and as a result this solves the problem. For this you will need a hot towel and use this to apply a moderate pressure on the cyst. Continue this for a week for about ten minutes. Over a period of time, you may observe that the cyst gradually reduces in size. Once you see these changes, use a hotter towel and some extra pressure to totally recede the problem.
  • Garlic is rich in anti-oxidants and helps to build up the overall immune system and fight against any kind of bacterial infections. Include ginger in your daily diet, this will help you alleviate the condition and help in the speedy recovery.
  • Foods that are rich in zinc are also good to rejuvenate the skin and heal the cyst from within.
  • Essential oils may be beneficial but yet don't forget to consult your doctor before using them. You may choose essential oils prepared from lemons, juniper, grapefruit and fennel.
  • An effective method that can be prepared at home using these ingredients of essential oils which includes four drops of grape fruit, juniper and cypress. Mix them well and to this further add six drops of laurel and 30 ml of sunflower.
  • Concoction of these oils on the affected area can give you a good relief because the oil can easily penetrate into the skin and clear away the toxins that are present in the cyst. This will finally heal the skin.
  • You can include face packs that are prepared from natural ingredients such as honey, nutmeg, cinnamon, garlic, orange peels and sandalwood powder. This will soothe the skin, stop the sebum production and give a natural glow to the skin.
  • Orange oil can be beneficial on the sebaceous cysts. You simply need to apply this oil and allow it to stay for sometime say 15 minutes.
  • Goldenseal and its oil can be used in the treatment of sebaceous cyst. This is also effective to reduce the infection.
  • For the cysts on your face, you can go for clay mask. This you can apply on the affected area and keep it the entire night and wash it off with some clean water the next day.

Preventive measures and tips for sebaceous cyst:

Sebaceous cyst will occur when it has to occur. There is no real way to stop the formation of the cyst. However, you can take up some tips and measures which are listed below:

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure
  • Do not use to much of oily skin lotion or other skin products
  • Do not scar or scratch the cyst area as this may lead to infection.
  • Keep the affected area clean and you can clean the lump and the surrounding skin with a good antibacterial soap.
  • If the infection occurs, then you can use tea tree oil on the area. The oil has some very good antiseptic properties which can help to drain out the sebum and thus helps in the quick healing.
  • Do not squeeze the cyst as this may result in the infection. Instead follow the home remedies to treat it.

In addition to these home remedies for sebaceous cyst, keep your body toxic free by drinking plenty of water about 8-10 glasses a day and eat a well-balanced diet food that supplies with the necessary vitamins and minerals to the body. Consult the dermatologist, if you see the treatments you are trying at home are not sufficient to heal the cyst.
