Home Remedies for Tonsils
Tonsils are two clumps of tissues on the either side of the throat. The inflammation of these tonsils causes tonsillitis. The infection is caused by either a common virus or a bacterial infection. Depending upon on the diagnoses, appropriate treatment is given. The tonsils are easily susceptible to infections, nevertheless, there are some home remedies for tonsils which can be used to treat and reduce the symptoms of the infection.
Symptoms of tonsillitis
The common victims of the infections are children because of the weak immune system. The signs and symptoms are listed below:
- Swollen and red tonsils
- Fever
- Painful while swallowing food
- White or yellow coating or some patches on the tonsils
- Sore throat
- The tender glands become enlarged
- A scratchy, muffled or throaty voice
- Stiff neck
- Bad breadth
- Headache
The main cause of tonsillitis is virus or bacteria and among the common bacterium is the streptococcus which is a group A streptococcus and most commonly cases strep throat.
Some of things you can do at home to avoid the infection to get worse are listed below:
- Stay in a moist humidifier in the bedroom and keep yourself warm and take proper rest.
- Drink lots of liquid and consume frozen yogurt or ice cream that will soothe the throat.
- Saline water is also effective to reduce tonsillitis. For this you mix a teaspoon of salt in 7 ounces of warm water and use this for gargling purpose for every half an hour.
- If you get fever, use some cold water to sponge the face that will give comfort.
- Vegetable juice like that of cucumber, carrot and beet are extremely beneficial. You can either take the juice individually or mixed them together and drink.
- A glass of milk with some turmeric added to it is effective for tonsillitis. You can also add turmeric and take it before going to sleep.
- Fenugreek seeds are also effective for the infection of the tonsils. Use two tablespoon of the seeds and allow them to simmer in some water say half a liter and allow it to cool before using for gargling purpose.
Other common home made remedies for tonsillitis are:
- Honey is also effective for the infection. Just add four teaspoons of honey in a glass of warm water and a pinch of common salt with a slice of fresh lemon juice and mix them well and finally drink it to get some instant result.
- A paste can prepared from horseradish seeds, jute seeds, flaxseeds, radish seeds and barley seeds and gently apply over the affected area that is the tonsils.
- You can also try another folk remedy by burning twigs of water hyacinth plant and use the ashes to apply on the tonsils to feel better.
- Another effective method is to use a lemon and cut into two slices and sprinkle some black pepper along with some salt and lick the lemon until you feel the entire juice has been extracted.
- Include more fruits in your diet and continue this for at least three to four days.
Some of the things that you need to be away when suffering from tonsillitis are listed below:
- Sour foods which include buttermilk and inflame food items like pickles etc.
- Spicy and hot food should be avoided as these may aggravate tonsils.
- Acidic drinks like soda drinks, hot beverages like tea and coffee are not suitable for tonsillitis.
- Smoking and drinking alcohol should also be avoided.
- The roots of white pea are also beneficial for tonsillitis. Firstly soak them in water and grind them for sometime. Drink the water in empty stomach and then eat your regular breakfast.
- A mixture of herbs like echinacea and goldenseal is effective for tonsillitis. Prepare tea using them or use them to gargle and drink them too.
- Betel leaves and mulathi are also effective for treating tonsillitis. Chew them for at least two or three times a day to get some immediate results.
- Garlic is one of the old methods to treat any throat and tonsil infections. This has inflammatory properties which is extremely effective for healing of tonsillitis.
- If you are looking for any herb for tonsillitis then oregano is the best known herb. Use a tinge of this herb in your daily diet to help you heal the infection as soon as possible. This is effective because the herb has some stimulant and antiseptic properties in them.
- Mint leaves are also effective for tonsillitis.
- Onion juice can also be used in the treatment of the infection. Mix two teaspoon of the juice in a glass of warm water and use this to gargle. This cures tonsillitis and is quite effective.
Apart from all the home remedies for tonsils, take a well-balanced diet and drink lots of water to keep the body hydrated and take proper rest and speak very less as this may stress the tonsils and cause further pain. Maintain a good personal hygiene as well as this will help you to heal quickly.
