Allergies occurring during a certain time of the year are known as seasonal allergy. The main cause of these allergies is pollen, which is due to response of the reproduction of trees, flowers, grasses and weeds. The two most frequent seasons that are responsible for allergies is spring and winter or which commonly known as fall. These are the seasons when the highest pollination takes place.

The NIAD (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases) recorded that about 35 million people are infected from seasonal allergy also called allergic rhinitis. The home remedy for seasonal allergy is one of the most inexpensive methods to treat the allergies and also it prevents you from using drugs which can be in some cases harmful otherwise.

Allergy Season

Spring is the season when most of the people complain about allergies. The National Center for Health Statistics recorded that about 16.9 million people in America had allergies in 2007, and about 12.2 million visited the doctor's office for allergies in 2006. Spring allergy is due to pollination which occurs anytime between January to April. It depends on the location and climate of the place. Trees that cause pollination and are responsible for allergies are olive, oak, elm, hickory, sycamore, maple, walnut, birch, ash and cypress.

Summer allergies may be due to grass pollens which are highest in this season. Itching and sometimes hives may result when in contact with grass.

There is a misconception that people do not get allergies during winters. But it is seen that some part of the world experience the worst allergy season in this time of the year. During winter time, a type of tree called Mountain cedar pollinates release pollens and causes allergies. It is the major cause of hay fever. There are other non pollen sources which may cause allergy like the cold windy weather. Ragweed allergy is common during this time.

Most of these allergies can be prevented or cured by following some simple home remedy for seasonal allergy methods.

  • The first thing you can do which is inexpensive is to increase your fluid intake. You should at least take six to eight liters of water daily.
  • You can also drink plain warm water or a hot soup or herbal tea can help you treating sinus. This helps in keeping the mucus flowing. By lowering your nose to these drinks and taking a deep breath helps opening the nasal passages.
  • Another alternate method and is a good home remedy for seasonal allergy is using the neti pots. This should not be followed if someone has undergone nasal surgery nor has a problem of nosebleed. Here approximately a half of warm saline water is poured in the pot. In one of the nostril, the spout of the neti pot is placed. Then breathe and it will come out from the other nostril. This method can be done four times daily.

Home remedies for seasonal allergy for treating histamine-related allergies:

  • Vegetable and salads made of fruits are one of the easy ways to treat allergies. This can help in boosting the immune system as it contains antioxidant and anti- inflammatory properties.
  • Goldenrod has antiseptic properties. You can either take leaves or flowers which can be prepared as tea. Consuming this can help you relieving allergy.
  • Elderflower can also be used as home remedy for seasonal allergy. You can prepare it as a drink or gargle with it to relieve your soar throat.
  • Olive leaf is an anti-microbial that can be used as nasal spray. You can steam the leaves of olive oil and relieve your allergy symptoms.

Some simple steps you can undertake and be taken as home remedy for seasonal allergy are

  • Cover your mouth while dusting
  • Use hot water to take showers to wash away the dust and pollens that have stuck to your body.
  • You can also prepare a solution by squeezing half a lemon in water which is warm. To it add one teaspoon of honey. Drinking this solution everyday will flush the toxins from the body. This is a common practice for home remedy for seasonal allergy.
  • For sinus congestion, a warm cloth over your nose and upper neck will help you to get relief to a great extent.
  • Having omega 3 fish and fish oil supplements can also reduce your chances of getting allergies.
  • Reduce the intake of red meat. It is found that red meat leads to increased inflammatory effects and makes allergy even worse.
  • Garlic, one of the proven properties for antiviral. Also known as the "Russian penicillin." You can simply have it or add it to your tea.

Home remedies for seasonal allergy work out to be less expensive than other alternates form of medicine. They are harmless and rarely cause any side effects.
