A stye is a skin disorder that refers to the painful red bump sited at the base of an eyelash or inside or under the eyelid. Medically it is known as Hordeolum. You can definitely consider some home remedies for stye to treat the disorder.

Causes of stye are as follows:

  • A sty is caused due to an infection of the oil glands of the eyelid. This acute infection generally occurs when these glands get clogged.
  • Stye occurs if the eyes get infected by a hair follicle at the base of an eye lash. The affected bacterium is known as Staphylococcus aureus which is responsible for causing stye.
  • Problems like inflammation of the eyelid can lead to the development of a stye in that region. This is known as blepharitis.

  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Pain
  • Uneasiness
  • Development of pimple or lump at the eyelid
  • Watering of the eyes
  • Fever

Home remedies for stye using hot compress and tea bag:

  • Apply a hot compress for 10 minutes 3 to 4 times every day. It will lessen any pain from the stye. This warm compress aids in speeding up the healing process and provides relief form stye.
  • Immerse a tea bag in very warm water. Apply it on the sty and let it stay in place for few minutes. This will aid in lessening the stye to almost half its size. The tanning acid in the tea has healing properties that reduces the stye.
  • Antibacterial dandelion tea helps the body to fight off bacteria which causes stye.

Home remedies for stye using clove, grated potato and coriander seeds:

  • Rub clove spice in water. Apply it over the stye to relief pain. Clove spice works wonders in treating a stye.
  • Grate potato and apply as a poultice over the stye. It reduces the swelling in inflamed eyes. You can also make a paste of potato and spread it on a cloth. Then apply it externally on swollen eyes to reduce inflammation.
  • Boil 1 teaspoon of coriander seeds in a cup of water. It is an excellent eyewash preparation. Rinse your eyes 3 to 4 times daily.

Home remedies for stye using aloe Vera and alum:

  • Slit an aloe Vera leaf lengthwise. Place the pulpy side on the painful eye.
  • Take a cup of water and soak 2 to 3 granules of alum in it. Use this water as eyewash.

Home remedies for stye using acacia leaves and turmeric:

  • In 2 cups of water boil few acacia leaves and prepare a strong extract out of the leaves. Apply it as compress on eyelids. It will provide fast relief from stye in the eye. Filter the preparation properly before use.
  • Turmeric possesses great healing powers. Take 1teaspoon of turmeric and boil it in 2 cups of water. Continue till it reduces to half. Pass the liquid several times through thinly woven cotton fabric so that all the turmeric granules are removed. Use the liquid as eye drops 2 to 3 times in a day. It will cure the stye. Besides this it also helps in lowering blood cholesterol, stimulates digestion and has benefits in weight loss.

Home remedies for stye using guava leaves and triphala water:

  • Use guava leaves warm compress to reduce the redness, inflammation and pain in eye from sty. Take warm Guava leaves and place them in warm damp cloth. Apply the compress slowly over affected region.
  • Wash your eyes with triphala water. Combine 1 teaspoon of triphala powder in 1 glass of water. Let it stay overnight. Filter the liquid in the morning. Wash your eyes with this liquid.

Tips to follow:

  • Avoid too much intake of sugary and starchy foods. Stye is contagious and can spread from an infected person to other family members.
  • Precautions like separate soap and separate towel should be taken.
  • Never burst the stye as it could spread in rest of the region of the eye which is not infected.
  • Avoid touching it with hands. Your hands may contain germs which could make things worse.

Palming the stye:

Sit in an arm chair and relax with your eyes closed. Cover your eyes with palms. Place right palm over right eye and left over the left. Never press your eyes. Try to imagine blackness which grows blacker with your eyes closed. Palming diminishes strain and relaxes the eyes.
